What can I expect from my first appointment?

Your first appointment will take approximately an hour and half during which time a comprehensive intake will occur. We will spend time reviewing your current medical condition in addition to your health history. We will look at factors affecting your physical and emotional well being--such as sleep, stress, and dietary choices.  An exam incorporating Traditional Chinese Medicine and Western medical techniques will also be performed. An acupuncture treatment typically occurs toward the end of the session and lasts approximately 30 minutes. The modes of treatment can include acupuncture, acupressure, cupping, herbal and/or nutritional therapies .

Please eat something before your scheduled appointment. You don't want to be overly full so be sure your meal is not too heavy. Many acupuncture points are easily accessible if you wear clothing that allows access to areas below the elbows and knees, but gowns are also provided if needed.

Your new patient intake forms will be sent to you in advance. We ask that you bring the filled out forms to your appointment.

How often do I need to receive treatment?

The number of treatments and length between appointments will vary depending on your condition and overall health. The recommended course of treatment will be discussed with you during your first appointment.

Generally, when patients first start receiving acupuncture they typically are treated 1-2 days per week during the initial stages of treatment. The frequency of treatments are reduced as wellness is restored. Some people will experience immediate relief from their first session while some will need a few treatments before they notice a substantial shift in their symptoms. In general, acute conditions of recent onset often require fewer treatments than chronic cases. After your initial intake and history are taken, recommendations on the best course of treatment will be discussed with you.

What does acupuncture feel like?

Patients report different feelings associated with acupuncture. Sometimes there is a sensation of pressure or a very mild dull ache. Rarely do patients describe acupuncture as painful. In fact, most first time patients are pleasantly surprised to discover they feel relaxed and comfortable during their treatment.

How does acupuncture work?

Acupuncture helps the body achieve balance, or homeostasis. It can impact every major system in the body in a safe and effective way. Acupuncture helps to unblock and balance energy in the body, and by doing so it activates the body's natural healing ability. Integration of acupuncture into Western science has led to research highlighting some of its major benefits. These benefits include (but are not limited to) decreasing stress, balancing the hormonal system, increasing circulation, and decreasing inflammation.

Do you have parking?

Yes, there is ample parking at our location. There is a multi level parking structure attached to the southern portion of our building on Barrington Ave. The parking structure fee is currently $1.50 per half hour and accepts cash only.  Please be sure to bring cash if you plan on parking in the lot (we do not validate parking). Parking after 4pm is a flat rate of $2.00. Parking is free after 6pm during weekdays and free all day Saturday.

There is also plenty of street parking located around and near the building. While there is metered parking directly outside the building, there is also free 2 hour parking on some of the surrounding streets.

Please note, if you decide on street parking PLEASE plan accordingly and give yourself ample time so you do not feel rushed. First time appointments last approximately an hour and a half. We recommend that you plan on being in the office two hours. You will want to allow yourself time to check in and out of your appointment without feeling rushed. Return patient appointments typically last one hour, but we recommend also allowing extra parking time for the reasons mentioned.

What forms of payment do you accept?

We accept cash, checks and all major credit cards. It's also helpful to remember that many Flex Spending Accounts (FSA) and Health Savings Accounts (HSA) will cover acupuncture.
